Introduction
Back in 2021, Benson Boone appeared poised to become the next American Idol—even then-judge Katy Perry thought so. However, Boone inexplicably walked away from the show after making season 19’s Top 24. Unwilling to become just another cog in the reality TV machine, the now 22-year-old cracked the U.S. Top 10 with his January 2024 single “Beautiful Things.” Just five months later, he opened for Taylor Swift during the London leg of her billion-dollar Eras Tour. Yesterday (Friday, April 11), Benson Boone checked off another career milestone when he brought out legendary Queen guitarist Brian May during his first-ever Coachella set.
Social Media Swoons Over Benson Boone (And Brian May)
Benson Boone brought all his performance hallmarks to his Coachella debut—sparkly bodysuit; intermittent backflips. However, certainly no one in the crowd was expecting to see Brian May join the “Ghost Town” crooner onstage.
Rocking an actual cape, Boone started off the performance behind a grand piano as a choir sang the opening verse to Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” After flipping off (literally) the instrument midway through the song, the BYU-Idaho dropout began delivering his best Freddie Mercury impression.
As the song’s iconic guitar solo arrived, so did Brian May. The living guitar god, 77, rose from underneath the stage and proceeded to absolutely shred.

The 1975 epic, off Queen’s A Night at the Opera, was truly a triumph of music. Boone’s performance lent the song all the pomp and circumstance it demands, and May’s surprise cameo was the perfect touch.
Appropriately, Boone bowed before the singer-songwriter-producer-astrophysicist after the performance concluded, with May saluting back.
Crowd’s Reaction To Brian May Baffles Social Media
Seeing Brian May join Benson Boone onstage at Coachella sent social media into a frenzy. Online, many fans wondered why those who experienced it live didn’t seem to have the same reaction.

“Why isn’t the audience freaking out over THEEE BRIAN MAY?!!?” one Tiktok user wondered. Another quipped, “Right concert, wrong crowd.”
While the audience reception may have come across somewhat chilly, the online reaction was anything but. “This is how Freddie would’ve wanted his song to be performed,” commented one awestruck TikTok user.
